The Great Macaulayan Achievement
Meera Nanda is a perfect product of British education system. Billions survived the educational brainwashing but she could not. Macaulay wanted “a class of persons Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals and in intellect.” Nanda exceeds even his vision. She’s not just anglicized in taste, she’s weaponized her alienation against her own civilization.
Macaulay Putri
Thus, Meera Nanda is Macaulay Putri (daughter) in terms of ideology. She is the perfect product of that Minute on Indian Education. He wanted to replace 5000 year old Sanskrit with English. Here is a person alienated from traditions and culture, completely. She writes Sanskrit word chittah as chitti in her book. In Hindi it becomes chitt. She can’t understand a word of Sanskrit but would judge the rituals and denounce religion. Her ignorance is of immense magnitude. She conflates:
- Ritual (prescribed actions – kriya)
- Tradition (inherited practices – parampara)
- Religion (organized belief systems – sampradaya)
- Dharma (cosmic/moral order – dharma)
Without Sanskrit, without textual grounding, these all collapse into one category: “superstition.” It’s like a person who can’t read music trying to review a symphony. The categories themselves are invisible to her.
The Linguistic Catastrophe
What makes her dangerous is the confidence born from ignorance. She doesn’t know that she doesn’t know. Living in America, credentialed by Western universities, published by Western presses, she has every external validation. But zero internal comprehension. She can’t understand Hindi/Sanskrit thought with English translations alone. The very grammar is different:
- Dharma has no English equivalent
- Dev or Devta has no English word. Mistranslated as God.
- Yajna isn’t just “ritual”
- Puja isn’t “worship” in the Abrahamic sense
- Moksha isn’t “salvation”
She’s analyzing a civilization through vocabulary that cannot contain it. Every translation is a mistranslation. Every interpretation is a reduction.
The Bitter Irony
She attacks “Hindu nationalism” while being the perfect argument FOR it. Her existence proves the general complaint. The education in India has created a comprador class that serves foreign frameworks while despising indigenous knowledge. Read about this political division here.
The Dharmic Response
Yet from a dharmic perspective, even she has her place. Her criticism, however flawed, forces articulation. The Bharati movement’s intellectual renaissance is partly response to such attacks. She’s an unwitting catalyst. But the sadness remains. A biologist who could have bridged indigenous and modern knowledge instead became their fiercest enemy. Macaulay’s revenge, 175 years later.
The Selective Rationalism
Her “rationalism” has borders and those borders are civilizational, not logical. She has no problem with churches or with Christians bowing to statue of Mother Mary or kissing the feet of statue of baby Christ. Or slaughter of animals by Muslims on Eid. Even China has temples. Examples are too many. She has shut her eyes to everything else. What She Attacks:
- Hindu car puja (idol worship, superstition)
- Temple donations (commercialization)
- Yagnas (ritualism)
- Astrology (pseudoscience)
- Pilgrimage (mass delusion)
What She Ignores:
- Christians kissing statues (also “idol worship”)
- Church tithes (also commercialization)
- Mass rituals (also ritualism)
- Islamic practices (completely exempt)
Rationalism
This isn’t rationalism. It is civilizational targeting disguised as rationalism. True rationalists (like Dawkins, Hitchens) attack ALL supernatural belief equally. They’re equal-opportunity offenders. Nanda is a selective prosecutor and that selectivity reveals ideology, not reason. There are three possibilities for this approach:
- Strategic Cowardice: She knows criticizing Islam invites violence, Christianity invites Western disapproval. Hinduism is the soft target. This is opportunism.
- Minority Protection Reflex: She’s internalized the postcolonial framework where only majority practices can be oppressive. Minorities get automatic exemption. This is ideological capture.
- Deep Self-Hatred: She reserves her harshest contempt for what’s closest to her origins. This is psychological displacement, the convert’s need to prove distance from the abandoned identity.
May be all three are at work together.
The Macaulayan Filter
Macaulay connection explains it perfectly. She’s absorbed the colonial hierarchy:
- Christianity = Civilization, Reason, Progress (exempt from critique)
- Islam = Exotic Other, requires sensitivity (exempt from critique)
- Hinduism = Primitive, Irrational, Obstacle (primary target)
This hierarchy still operates in Western academia. Nanda simply internalized it and projected it in her work.
The Selective Condemnation
The Vahan Puja vs. Car Blessing is another test case:
- Catholic priests blessing new cars at Easter = charming folk custom
- Hindu priest performing car puja = dangerous fundamentalism
Same act. Different judgment. The difference? Civilizational prejudice. Instead, she hides behind universal rationalism while practicing particular targeting. This is bad faith scholarship.
The Political Function
Her selectivity serves a political purpose. By attacking only Hindu practices. She provides academic cover for anti-Hindu politics and keeps Muslim/Christian vote banks undisturbed. She signals allegiance to the ecosystem of globalist/”secular” coalition. She is part of this ecosystem that has condemned:
- Hindu Karwa Chauth fasting = patriarchal oppression, health hazard, superstition
- Islamic Ramadan fasting = respected religious practice, not criticized
A genuine rationalist would say: “ALL fasting for supernatural purposes is irrational. Karwa Chauth AND Ramadan.” They can’t. The minority protection framework won’t allow it. They do not address medically recommended, intermittent fasting at all.
But she condemns political Iftar parties as vote bank politics, tokenism, and performative secularism. This is brilliant monkey balancing:
- She can’t attack Islam directly (fear of backlash, Western academic norms, minority protection paradigm)
- So she attacks the POLITICAL use of Islamic practice (Iftar parties) while leaving the religious practice itself (Ramadan fasting) untouched
- But for Hinduism, she attacks BOTH the political AND the religious like car pujas, temple donations, yagnas, pilgrimages, ALL rituals are fair game
Triumph of Macaulay
Her Civilizational Hierarchy is fixed. Her unconscious (or conscious) ranking follows Macaulay, as stated above:
- Islam = Protected minority, must be defended, only political exploitation criticized
- Christianity = Modern, rational, Western (her adopted framework)
- Hinduism = The civilizational enemy, attack root and branch
So she compartmentalizes: Hindu practices are superstition. Islamic practices are culture requiring political respect.
This is Macaulay’s ultimate triumph. She’s internalized civilizational hierarchy so completely that she CANNOT see her own selective application of rationalist critique. Her psychology is that of the colonized intellectual who has adopted the colonizer’s framework entirely.
The Supari (Contract) Model
Perhaps she’s not a scholar. She is a hired pen with ideological ink. The contract has three parts:
- The Brief: Delegitimize Hindu resurgence before 2009 elections
- The Payment: Academic prestige, Western validation, publication platform
- The Delivery: 240 pages of selective condemnation, rushed to print. Numerous papers. Another book in 2016, just before elections in Uttar Pradesh, in 2017.
Her colonized mind made her the PERFECT candidate. She was already alienated from Hindu civilization (living in USA). She is already credentialed (Western PhD, Templeton fellow). She is ideologically aligned (rationalist framework that only targets Hinduism) and is emotionally invested with rage at India for not following her secular script. She didn’t need convincing. She needed commissioning. The supari worked because it matched her existing mental framework:
- External validation hunger (Western academic approval)
- Civilizational self-hatred (Macaulay’s perfect product)
- Missionary complex (saving India from itself)
- Selective blindness (can’t see Christian/Islamic parallels)
The Circumstantial Evidence:
The forensic evidence proves the following:
- Manuscript rejected by Navayana (August 2008) – too broad, too anti-Hindu even for anti-caste publisher
- 26/11 terror attack (November 2008) – opportunity for last-minute framing
- Random House rescue (December 2008) – publisher with election-cycle strategy
- Rush publication (December-February 2009) – just before April elections
- Sloppy editing – multiple voices, chronological errors, inconsistent tone
This is a commissioned hit job, not organic scholarship. But she genuinely believes that the target deserved it. The money (prestige) and the ideology (colonized rationalism) aligned perfectly. She did not compromise her principles rather, her principles WERE the weapon.
A colonized mind given a brief to attack her own civilization, executed with academic cover, timed for maximum political impact, selective in targeting, dishonest in framing, and completely unconscious of her own role.
Macaulay would be proud of Meera Nanda. But India moved on without her.
In next article we will discuss that Meera Nanda knows that she is expecting impossible but by concealing the expectation she is hiding insanity behind rationality.
