A War to Redraw Maps
The war in West Asia (Middle East) is going on. Bombing of Iran is continuing. World leaders are asked about the objective of war and how long it will continue and the answers keep changing. Timeline keeps shifting. Recently, President Trump has given an interview to Times and said that there is no timeline for conclusion of war. Israel Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said same thing to Palki Sharma in an interview on the sidelines of Raisina Dialogues.
So what exactly is happening in Iran? What is the game plan in Iran? Let’s analyse it together. My hypothesis is that it is a cartological war. It is a war to create a cartologically correct world.
Cartological War
Basically the USA is attempting to correct the errors of the British Empire which drew the map of this world roughly a hundred years ago with a ruler, a pen, and no understanding of the people living there. Those lines created a century of conflict. USA thinks it can correct those errors with bombs.
A British named Halford Mackinder drew a map in 1904 that still kills people today. He said whoever controls Eastern Europe commands the Heartland i.e. Central Eurasia, roughly modern Russia and Central Asia. Control the Heartland and you control the World Island. Control the World Island and you rule the planet.
It was British anxiety about Russia dressed up as geographical science, but it worked. The theory became doctrine. The USA is paranoid of breach of Mackinder’s heartland. It is a threat to the Empire.
Ukraine sits exactly where Mackinder said the decisive battle would happen. For 30 years, NATO expanded eastward. Poland, the Baltics, Romania as each membership pushed closer to Russia’s borders. To Moscow, this looked like encirclement. To Washington, it looked like spreading democracy. Both were really just playing Mackinder’s game.
Ukraine was the line Russia would not let cross. Let it join NATO and the Heartland is breached, Western military infrastructure reaches Russia’s core, everything the theory warns about happens. So, Russia invaded in 2022. It was an expected response.
Now we have another map to fight on. That of Ralph Peter. His 2006 Armed Forces Journal map titled “Blood Borders” redrew the entire Middle East and South Asia. It was published in an official US military journal.
Look at the picture of map given above. Look at what Ralph Peters drew in 2006 and what has already happened since. Iraq is gone exactly as drawn. Sunni Iraq, Arab Shia State, and Kurdish region are functional realities today even without formal partition. The map predicted it. The 2003 invasion delivered it.
The plan has been drawn on paper inside American strategic circles for twenty years.
Iran on this map is a rump state. Stripped of its Azerbaijani north, its Kurdish northwest, and most devastatingly Free Baluchistan carved from its entire southeastern flank. Operation Epic Fury is not a war. It is a surveying exercise with bombs.
Mackinder said control this geography to control the world. Peters said here is how you reorganize it ethnically. The current war is the operational bridge between the two theories separated by a century.
Mackinder’s greatest fear was a Eurasian land power combining with a naval power to challenge British supremacy. Replace Britain with America and that fear today is the China-Russia axis. Free Baluchistan directly cuts China’s only warm water access. Mackinder’s 1904 anxiety is being addressed by Peters’ 2006 map through 2026 bombs.
Regime Change is not the Goal
In statecraft, lying is a perfect art. Say one thing and do another thing. That is the standard protocol. It is the standard grammar of diplomacy.
Regime change as stated goal has no exit mechanism. Nobody has named the successor government. Nobody has identified a credible Iranian leader waiting in exile. The Interim Leadership Council is a phantom. Thirty years of US regime change attempts have produced zero functional successor states.
Yugoslavia did not have regime change. It was dismembered into seven states along ethnic and religious lines. Sudan was split. Iraq was effectively trisected into Kurdish north, Sunni center, and Shia south even without formal partition.
Iran’s ethnic map makes it surgically vulnerable. Ahwazi Arabs in Khuzestan sit on roughly 80% of Iran’s oil. Balochistan borders Pakistan and Afghanistan. Kurdish regions connect to already semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan. These are not random fracture lines. They are pre-existing ones.
Regime change gives a hostile new government that still controls all the oil. Dismemberment gives you three or four weak statelets each desperate for Western recognition and investment. Khuzestan alone as an independent Arab emirate would be the most valuable piece of real estate on earth.
Bombing Iran to Rubble
Strategy is to bomb a unified Iran into rubble. Ethnic regions then self-organize under external sponsorship. Nobody needs boots on ground for regime change. You need boots on ground for state-building in three smaller, weaker, grateful territories.
A government hiding underground to survive is simultaneously surrendering the one thing that makes it a government. Physical presence across territory. Tax collection. Courts. Police. Local administration. All of it requires showing up above ground.
Tehran can survive in caves. It cannot govern Khuzestan from caves. It cannot govern Balochistan from caves. It cannot govern Kurdistan from caves.
The moment Iranian state authority retreats underground, a vacuum opens above ground in the periphery. That vacuum does not stay empty. It fills with whoever is locally organized, externally funded, and ethnically motivated.
This explains the air campaign. The goal is not to kill the government. The goal is to drive it underground and keep it there long enough for peripheral ethnic regions to develop facts on the ground.
You do not need to defeat Iran. You need to make Iran ungovernable from the center.
Timeline
This also explains why nobody can give a timeline or keep shifting it. Regime change has a finish line. Dismemberment does not. It is a process measured in months and years of controlled fragmentation. Hegseth’s shifting timeline from four weeks to eight weeks to open ended now makes complete sense.
There is so much work to do. Ethnic promises to activate separatist movements. Financial leverage through IMF to discipline neighboring states. Intelligence sharing to pick winners inside fractured territories.
The war ends not when Tehran falls. It ends when Khuzestan, Balochistan, and Kurdistan stop looking to Tehran for anything.
Greater Balochistan
India watched a ship that was its naval guest get torpedoed without warning. Four days of silence after that is not diplomatic caution. It is a conversation happening outside public view. What India asked for and what it was promised in those four days is the most consequential unknown in this entire story.
Greater Balochistan is another idea which appeared in Ralph Peters’ map. Gwadar is inside Free Baluchistan on Ralph’s map. Gwadar is currently China’s most strategic port in Pakistan. A Free Baluchistan severs China’s access to the Arabian Sea permanently. This is not just about Iran. This is about containing China’s Belt and Road at its most vulnerable point.
Pakistan does not appear as Pakistan on this map. Its western territory simply becomes Free Baluchistan. The country is quietly amputated without being named. Therefore, the commentators on Pakistani TV channels, like Najam Sethi are instinctively right when they express fear that they are next. The Ralph’s map is the plan which these Pakistani did not care to look.
The Obstacles
Turkey will not accept an independent Kurdish state on its border. It never did. That is the single factor that could derail this plan. Erdogan has more leverage over Washington than most analysts admit. Yet the Turkish lira is falling incessantly making Turkish purchasing power dwindle. Erdogan may also be a target, in the coming day. That is something to watch for.
This is not a prediction. It is an analysis and every analysis has possibility of being wrong. I wish that ‘Blood Border’ map does not play out but if it does, there is going to be a more pain and human suffering in coming days.
