The Global Conundrum of Caste or Economic Segregation: Chapter 6.
In Chapter 5, it was demonstrated that American society has a caste structure. Through the racial sieve, this structure filters every citizen.[1] This chapter examines the operation of this sieve. It shows how it works at its best to help the depressed.
The USA, the land of the free, maintained segregated laws and practices. Black citizens had to live, work, and operate away from white people as far as possible. They had separate buses, public toilets, and designated ghettos. Schools had separate classes for white and Black children. Slavery was abolished by Abraham Lincoln, but the slave-owner mindset persisted. How can a former slave be equal to a former slave-owner? As stated in Chapter 5, unequals were not treated as equals.
In 1954, the Supreme Court ordered the desegregation of public schools.[2] President Eisenhower issued an Executive Order in 1957, beginning with schools in Arkansas.[3] When the Governor of Arkansas refused, Eisenhower deployed military forces to enforce the ruling.[4]
The wheels of law churn slowly. The grind of law is fine. But it takes a long time to percolate to society. As stated in Chapter 5, the Supreme Court struck down bans on interracial marriages in 1967. But interracial marriage in a church was a near impossibility.
The Mormon Church accepted white men practicing polygamy with multiple white wives. Heaven came under no threat. However, marriage between white and Black individuals remained socially forbidden. Brigham Young stated this publicly while preaching in favor of polygamy. Nothing had yet changed.
The Southern Baptist tradition had its own long history of the same. The Catholic Church had no formal ban, but local priests faced social pressure to refuse. Mainstream Protestant denominations did not welcome interracial marriages.
Against this background, a couple decided to marry. White-skinned Thomas and Black-skinned Doria could register their marriage legally. However, they could not obtain church blessings. Finally, they found a way.
Hindu Vedic Marriage
Thomas Markle is of German, Dutch, English, and Irish descent. His ancestor Heinrich Martin Merckel emigrated from Alsace on the French-German border. He came to Pennsylvania in the eighteenth century. Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, is African American. Doria’s first identifiable African-American ancestor was Richard Ragland, born into slavery around 1792. The Ragland surname came from William Ragland. He was a British slaveholder and Methodist planter who settled in Georgia.
No church in the USA would solemnize their marriage. Consequently, a Vedic sect from India stepped forward. The marriage was solemnized in a Hindu temple. Swami Yoganand’s temple on Sunset Boulevard asked no questions about race. It had no American racial theology to defend. The caste system of India did not interfere in marriage or death. Caste might affect the luxury of the ceremony, but not the sacred Vedic rituals.
The press now calls it exotic. This is the same press whose churches refused to perform the ceremony. The mockery came from the institution that had no answer when the couple knocked on its door. The Hindu temple solved the problem the church created. Today, it receives condescension as its reward. The racism this marriage exposed was washed away by exotic vocabulary.
Rachel Meghan Markle was born in Los Angeles on August 4, 1981. Her parents were Doria Ragland and Thomas Markle. They separated in 1983 and divorced in 1987.
Both parents lived highly complex lives. Thomas acted as a doting father. Doria became a highly ambitious professional. Today, Thomas is estranged with his daughter. Meanwhile, her mother is in a reasonably closer but formal relationship with her. Thomas seems to be financially broke with fragile health. He is dependent upon tabloids to feed gossip and earn. Doria is a CEO and an established, wealthy business woman. They are a textbook example. They show why couples in the West are opting out of procreating and raising children. But they are not the story. Meghan is.
Romancing to Conquer
Rachael Meghan Markle was an actress waiting for a break. She was paying her bills while pursuing many things but not getting any memorable role. She supplemented with freelance calligraphy, including work for Dolce and Gabbana correspondence and celebrity wedding invitations. She began dating film producer Trevor Engelson in 2004 and they married in Jamaica in August 2011. They divorced by mutual consent in February 2014 citing irreconcilable differences.
Meghan’s former best friend and maid of honor was Ninaki Priddy. She said Engelson had the rug pulled out from under him. Reports claimed Meghan posted her wedding and engagement rings back to him by mail from Toronto. What happened?
Suits happened.
Meghan Markle got the biggest break of her acting career. This occurred within a few years of her marriage with Trevor Engelson. She landed a lead role in the hit TV show Suits. We are told that it was a coincidence. Do you believe this?
Such coincidences are frequent in American society. This had been seen in respect of political offices in Chapter 5. Marriages seem to open doors. These were not available to Black or mixed-race candidates. The pattern is visible enough without proof.
Halle Berry’s career exploded after her relationship with white Hollywood. Her earlier marriages, David Justice and Eric Benét, were Black men. Her Oscar came during her relationship with white industry connections.
Jennifer Lopez is a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx. Her romantic associations progressively moved her toward whiter, wealthier, more powerful men. Each relationship opened a bigger room.
Janet Jackson’s relationship was with René Elizondo, a lighter-skinned Latino. Then it was with Wissam Al Mana, a Qatari billionaire. These show the same upward mobility through romantic association. Wealth replaced whiteness as the caste marker.
Mariah Carey is mixed race like Meghan. She married Tommy Mottola, who controlled Sony Music and therefore controlled her career entirely. She has spoken openly about that relationship being both her launch and her prison.
This pattern shows that individual women are not making calculated choices. It is a system that consistently rewards upward romantic mobility and calls it love.
Suits
Rachael Meghan Markle played Rachel Zane on the legal drama Suits. Rachel Zane was an ambitious mixed-race woman navigating a white institution while looking composed and deserving. Now, the Duchess of Sussex delivers the same performance with a better wardrobe and a global audience.
The marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018 is not merely a royal betrothal. It represents the historic fusion of old-world British aristocracy and new-world American celebrity. This marriage combined traditional title-based privilege with modern attention-based media capital. The result is the creation of a new global celebrity caste.
Meanwhile, the romantic diary of Meghan Markle’s mother Doria Ragland is scrubbed clean. There is nothing about her personal life on the internet. The public is made to believe that after divorcing Thomas in 1983, she lived a celibate life. No more is said.
The USA Headquarters of the Attention Caste
This new caste is physically and commercially headquartered in the United States. It leverages the symbolic prestige of the British crown to secure massive corporate contracts. Their content creations include ghostwritten books and public speaking engagements. These deals also include multi-million dollar partnerships with Netflix, Spotify, and global publishers.
Rather than escaping public attention, this caste monetizes it on an unprecedented scale. They exchanged traditional constitutional duties for the freedom of corporate brand-building. They replaced institutional dependence with market branding.
Preaching and “Tom-Tomming” Globally
From their secure estates, members of this caste lecture the global public on morality. They tom-tom their views on climate change, mental health, and what not, all over the world. Yet, their own jet-setting lifestyles remain entirely insulated from the rules they prescribe for others. Perhaps they will discuss the complicity of England and the royal family in slavery.[5]
Flying in private jets to environmental conferences exemplifies this profound credibility gap. The advocacy is not about genuine public service; it is about status signaling. They use noble-sounding causes to justify their elite status and immense wealth.
The Endogamy Defense Mechanism
The British royal family operates on strict rules of social and institutional endogamy. This system preserves inherited identity and prevents the dilution of symbolic capital across generations. When Harry married outside this social grammar, the institution triggered its defense protocol. Marry outside, and the system ejects you.
This matches the structural logic of traditional Jati networks. The only difference is that Britain hides its sorting behind the language of class and tradition. The marriage did not collapse because of individual traits. It collapsed because the couple refused to put their earnings in a common pool. They labeled this financial independence, and the press loved it.
Conclusion
The difficult part is who broke away from the caste in the marriage? Meghan is no more acting on screen. Harry is no more waving hands for the Royal family. It is a mutation.
The merger of aristocracy and celebrity has birthed a truly modern caste mutation. It is a mobile, international elite that wields moral authority without institutional accountability. This is the high price of modern class denial.
The next chapter discusses the American Dalits. These citizens face the real brunt of society and the state alike.
